Chile: Lawmakers approve bill to decriminalize marijuana
July 8 , 2015
Lawmakers in Chile have approved a bill that allows people to grow small quantities of marijuana for recreational, medical, or spiritual purposes.
The measure, backed by the lower house of Congress by a margin of 68-39, permits each home to grow up to six marijuana plants.
So far, selling, planting, and transporting the drug has been a punishable offense in Chile and could attract a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
A health commission will now examine the bill before it goes to the Senate for approval.
