Chile: Capital in shutdown mode after smog emergency
June 23 , 2015
Authorities in Santiago, Chile’s capital and largest city, ordered more than 600,000 vehicles off the streets and shut down hundreds of polluting businesses after excessive smog triggered an emergency.
The city is playing host to the Copa America tournament.
The emergency was lifted later after air quality showed signs of improvement, but some 300,000 vehicles remained off the streets.
Officials also urged residents to stay away from physical activity outdoors.
