Category 5 Hurricane Irma causes devastation in Caribbean Islands
September 7 , 2017
The 'superstorm' Irma wreaked havoc as it smashed the Caribbean Islands early Wednesday. The most powerful Category 5 hurricane battered Barbuda, St. Martin and Puerto Rico. Hurricane Irma roared through the Caribbean Islands with record winds of 185 mph shaking homes, destroying and flooding buildings, tearing apart roofs from houses and leaving the islands without electricity. At least three people lost their lives due to Irma. St. Maarten Airport was also destroyed by powerful hurricane Irma. Superstorm Irma is stronger than last eight storms combined. Hurricane Irma is the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and passed almost directly over the islands of Barbuda. It has damaged almost 95% of Barbuda's buildings and has left almost 60% of its population homeless. Gaston Browne, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, said, “Barbuda right now is literally a rubble.” He further said that rebuilding the island would cost at least $100 million.
