Carrie Lam Becomes the First Female Hong Kong Chief Executive

  • A committee of 1,194-persons today chose Carrie Lam the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Lam becomes the first female leader in the history of Hong Kong city. Out of the total 1,163 valid votes cast, 777 people voted for Carrie Lam followed by John Tsang (365 votes) and Woo Kwok-hing (21 votes). While speaking to the media, Carrie Lam thanked all the election committee members irrespective of who they voted for. Meanwhile, hundreds of pro-democracy protesters (far smaller than previously expected) carried signs of “scam election” and called the election a whitewash.
