Canada thwarts 'al-Qaeda inspired' attack on train
April 23 , 2013
Canadian authorities on Monday arrested and charged two people with conspiring to carry out an "al-Qaeda inspired" attack on a passenger train.
The suspects Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35, were arrested in Montreal and Toronto.
They have been accused of planning to derail a VIA passenger train in the greater Toronto area. It was not clear when the attack would take place.
The suspects are due to appear in court later today for a bail hearing.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the surveillance operation that led to the arrests of the two men was "a result of extensive collaborative efforts".
The pair are not Canadian citizens. It is believed they were supported by "al-Qaeda elements in Iran".
