Canada election: 1.4 million expats barred from voting
July 21 , 2015
About 1.4 million expat Canadians have been barred from voting in the general election by a court in Ontario.
The ruling by the appeals court has overturned last year’s verdict, which was in favor of two expatriates who had challenged a law barring citizens living outside the country for more than five years from casting their ballot in Canada’s federal elections.
On Monday, the court argued that such a permission to non-residents would be detrimental to the “social contract” between resident voters and Parliament.
