Burundi: President Pierre Nkurunziza wins third term

  • Pierre Nkurunziza has won a third term as Burundi’s president in an election whose credibility has been questioned by the international community.

According to the electoral commission’s provisional results, Nkurunziza took 70% of the vote.

His announcement in April that he would seek a third term was condemned as unconstitutional by the opposition and triggered violence that has claimed about 70 lives. Thousands have fled Burundi in the past few months.
