Burundi: Defiant president says election 'only solution' to crisis
May 7 , 2015
Refusing to step down after his 10-year tenure, Burundi’s president Pierre Nkurunziza has said he will run for a third term next month. His decision, considered unconstitutional by opponents, has triggered condemnation and violent protests in the country. He said holding a poll was the “only solution” to the crisis.
Over a dozen people have been killed in clashes after the ruling party nominated Nkurunziza for re-election. The violence has prompted more than 35,000 people to flee the country.
