Burma to release 73 political prisoners
July 24 , 2013
As Burma's president promised in Europe, he is releasing as many as 73 political prisoners today in addition to hundreds of those that are already set free. An official reported that the total number of prisoners have dropped to lesser than 100 for the first time in many years. Reports on the remaining number of prisoners vary coming from different sources.
The committee that determines as to which prisoners have committed political crimes and which ones are inside because of criminal offences is comprised of 19 members and the committee itself includes 10 ex-political prisoners apart from six people appointed by the government and three mediators.
It is expected that the remaining prisoners would be freed by the end of the month.
