British MPs back plan for EU referendum
June 10 , 2015
British MPs have overwhelmingly voted in favor of holding a referendum to determine whether the UK will remain a member of the European Union (EU).
The vote was 544 to 53 in support of the bill, which will now be examined by an MPs’ committee and has to pass through several more stages.
Philip Hammond, the UK foreign secretary, said that a “generation” of Britons had been denied their say on Britain’s place in Europe, and the time had come for the people's voice to be heard.
