Brazilian Judge Bars President Bolsonaro's Coup Celebration

  • A Brazilian judge has barred celebration of 55th anniversary of the 1964 Brazilian military coup that overthrew the then democratic government. Judge Ivani Silva da Luz observed that the celebration event planned by President Jair Bolsonaro (scheduled to be held on Sunday) is not “compatible with the process of democratic reconstruction”. He went on to say that the Brazilian Congress must approve the commemorative dates first. Reports say that over 434 people were either killed or disappeared during the 21 years of dictatorship. Newly elected Brazilian President Bolsonaro was an ex-army captain and admires former dictators openly. Federal Public Prosecutor's Office of Brazil has issued a statement saying celebrating the anniversary of 1964 Brazilian military coup will mean the celebration of “an unconstitutional regime responsible for serious crimes of violation of human rights.”
