Brazil polls: Marina Silva is Socialist party candidate for president
August 22 , 2014
Former environment minister Marina Silva is the new presidential candidate of the Brazilian Socialist party, replacing Eduardo Campos who was killed in a plane crash.
Silva will now challenge Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s president, in the polls scheduled in October.
Silva, who comes from a poor family of rubber tappers, was earlier the vice-presidential candidate in the campaign led by Campos.
Aécio Neves, the pro-market leader of the Social Democratic party, is also in the fray.
