Brazil: Authorities contain blazes at Amazon reserve

  • Authorities in Brazil have managed to contain multiple blazes that have destroyed about half of an indigenous Amazon reserve.

About 12,000 indigenous people live in Arariboia reserve in the country’s Maranhao state. Community leaders alleged that the fires were started by loggers who have an eye on the area’s natural resources.

Hundreds of troops joined firefighters in extinguishing the blazes. Heavy rains also played a major role in putting out the fires.
