October 26 , 2014
The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has emerged winner in the country’s general elections, media reports said.
The ruling party bagged at least 33 parliamentary seats of the 57 being contested, thus crossing the 29-seat mark needed to form the government, according to Botswana’s electoral commission.
The opposition alliance, Umbrella for Democratic Change, won only 14 seats.
President Ian Khama’s BDP has ruled the country ever since it became independent in 1966.
