'Book-keeper of Auschwitz' sentenced to four years in prison
July 16 , 2015
A court in Germany has sentenced Oskar Groening, a former guard at Auschwitz, to four years in prison. Groening, 94, was convicted of being an accessory to the murder of around 300,000 Jews at the Nazi camp.
Known as the “book-keeper” of Auschwitz, his responsibility at the camp was to count the belongings that had been confiscated from the prisoners. He had admitted to “moral” guilt, but his lawyers argued that he did not play a role in facilitating genocide. Groening may be one of the last Nazis to stand trial.
