Blaze at India fireworks factory kills 34
September 6 , 2012
At least 34 people have died and 30 others injured in a blaze at a fireworks factory in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu.
The fire at the Om Shakti factory on Wednesday triggered several other explosions of firecrackers.
The fire took place in the town of Sivakasi. The town is the hub of India's firecracker industry and produces 90 percent of the country’s fireworks.
It took fire fighters about five hours to control the fire.
Around 250 workers were reported to be inside the factory at the time of the incident.
It is not yet clear how the fire started though police are trying to locate the factory owner, who could face charges of culpable homicide.
The provincial government has announced compensation for the victims and has ordered a probe into the incident.
