Thousands of people fled the fighting around Tripoli airport as militias got engaged in deadly battles to seize the area.
Rockets and artillery are being used by both sides as militias from Misrata try to wrest control of the airport from groups belonging to Zintan, reports said. Some missiles slammed into apartments close to the airport, with the chaos in the Libyan capital spreading.
US ambassador, Deborah Jones, in a message on Twitter said there was “heavy shelling and other exchanges of fire” in the Abu Salim neighborhood, where the American embassy is located.
