Bangladesh Student Protest Flares Up, PM urges Students to Go Home as "Third Party" could Sabotage Protest

  • Around 25 student and youth protesters (demanding improved road safety along with stricter enforcement of traffic laws after two youths were killed by a speeding bus) were injured after reportedly being beaten up by members of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling party’s student wing. Parts of Dhaka (capital city of Bangladesh) have come to a standstill as thousands of protesters took to the streets. On 8th day of the unprecedented protest, tear gas shells were fired by police to disperse the crowd. Mobile internet services have been shut down as social media groups were used for organizing the protest. On Sunday, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged students and youth protesters to go home as “third party” could sabotage the protests for own political gains.
