Austrian and Italian Interior Ministers Call for Screening Rescued Asylum Seekers at Sea

  • Austria and Italy’s right-wing interior ministers have called on the European Union to screen the migrants (by processing their asylum claims) while holding them at sea before granting asylum. The idea was put forward by Austrian interior minister Herbert Kickl in Vienna during a European Union migration conference. This idea was supported by Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini, who is currently under investigation in his own country for allegedly refusing to let migrants disembark on Italian soil last month. While putting forward the idea, Herbert Kickl also said (without elaborating) that they would use a “quick way” of screening the asylum seekers and will solve the problem of repatriation.
