Austria goes to the polls

  • In Austria, the presidential run –off poll could elect European Union’s first rightist leader. Nobert Hofer belonging to the Freedom Party is against Alexander Van der Bellen, an independent candidate backed by the Greens. Since World War two, it is the first time ever that both the centrist parties had been knocked down in the first round itself as a result of the migrant crisis. The presidency is a ceremonial post to a large extent in Austria, but the president does have the power to dismiss the government.  Hofer has already topped the first vote but fell short of a majority, though the expected run off is going to be close.
