Australian PM wins Liberal Party's vote of confidence, survives leadership test

  • Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott has survived a big test of his political career by winning the Liberal Party’s vote of confidence on his leadership 61 to 39.

This means his position will not be challenged within the party at least in the near future. Following the vote, Abbott appealed for unity within his party, saying “this matter is behind us”.

A series of missteps by the prime minister had led to the leadership test. He later admitted that last year’s unpopular budget may have been “too bold and too ambitious”.
