July 15 , 2014
Survivors of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria will get around $500m in a record class action settlement in Australia.
Carol Matthews, the lead plaintiff, and another 10000 members claimed that energy provider SPI Electricity’s faulty equipment ignited the February 2009 bushfire that killed 119 people.
The fire also caused damage estimated to be worth $1bn and destroyed 1200 homes.
SP AusNet (SPI Electricity) said there was no admission of liability by the firm or other parties.
