Australia 'sick of being lectured' by UN on asylum seekers: PM Abbott
March 9 , 2015
Hitting out at the UN, Australia’s prime minister Tony Abbott said his country was “sick of being lectured” over its handling of asylum seekers.
Abbott’s remarks came after the UN special rapporteur said some conventions against torture were violated.
Australia detains asylum seekers arriving by boat and holds them in offshore detention centers. The conditions on Manus Island, where the asylum-seekers are kept, have been criticized by some human rights groups.
The PM described Australia’s actions as “most humanitarian…[and] most compassionate”.
