Aung San Suu Kyi sworn in to parliament

  • Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sworn in as a member of Myanmar’s parliament after her party’s victory in the country’s by-elections last month.

Suu Kyi and the 42 members of her National League for Democracy (NLD) had initially refused to take part in the ceremony due to the wording of an oath.

The NLD said they would not take part in the ceremony until the wording was changed from “safeguard” to “respect” the constitution.

The party agreed to compromise during UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s visit to Myanmar this week.

This is the first time the Nobel Laureate has held public office
