An estimated 27 migrants have died after they were picked up near Lampedusa island, according to the Italian coast guard.
The reason for the deaths is being attributed to hypothermia.
The victims were part of a group comprising 105 people on a boat some 100 miles from Italy’s territory, reports said.
They asked for help after trouble at sea, facing eight-meter high waves and near-freezing temperatures. They then spent about 18 hours on the patrol boats’ open decks on the route to dry land, media reports said.
