Armenia observes centenary of mass killings of its people

  • Centenary commemorations have begun in Armenia to mark the 1915 mass killings of Armenians.

Thousands of people are expected to assemble at a memorial near capital Yerevan.

Turkey rejects the use of the word “genocide” to describe the killings, but Armenia and many foreign governments believe that the massacres during the disintegration of the Ottoman Turk empire constituted a genocide.

Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkish Prime Minister, has said that his country would “share the pain” of the Armenian people.
