Argentinean judge orders seizure of Falklands oil firms' assets

  • An Argentinean judge has ordered the seizure of assets of five oil firms that are drilling in the Falkland Islands.

Lilian Herraez, the Tierra del Fuego judge, told authorities to seize assets worth $156 million belonging to the companies.

Argentina calls the islands Malvinas, and claims sovereignty over them. Britain has held the Falkland Islands for 180 years.

The oil companies concerned -- Rockhopper Exploration Plc, Premier Oil Plc, Noble Energy Inc, Falkland Oil and Gas Ltd, and Edison International Spa -- are not based in Argentina, so it is difficult to say how the order will be enforced.
