Anti-ISIS Syrian force launch new Raqqa campaign

  • The Kurdish and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have on Saturday announced the launch of a new phase of their campaign for the ISIS’s stronghold of Raqqa in Syria. The SDF had launched Euphrates Wrath Operation to capture the city of Raqqa last November. Though they have taken some ground further up the Euphrates Valley but are still some distance away.

The SDF’s official Spokesperson for the Euphrates Wrath Operation, Cihan Shekh Ehmed said to press that the new phase will aim at securing the eastern countryside of the Raqqa city.

Speaking in the village of Aaliyah, Ehmed said that 750 more fighters have joined the SDF and the US-led coalition has launched air strikes against ISIS in Syria and Iraq since 2014.

United States capital Washington has send about 500 troops including bomb disposal experts, and trainers to support the SDF’s campaign. Also, Washington has provided the SDF with armored SUV since President Donald Trump took office.

However, SDF states that the number of vehicles is very small and that they will increase in the coming days.

Local SDF commander Rojda Felat said that the weapons they need to liberate the city are tanks, heavy machine guns and armoured vehicles.
