American tourist gang-raped in India
June 5 , 2013
A 30-year-old American woman has been gang-raped in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, the police said on Tuesday.
The woman was attacked after she accepted a ride by three men in a truck in the resort town of Manali.
The men drove the woman to an isolated location where they raped her and robbed her.
According to police, the woman said she accepted the lift after looking for a taxi in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
No arrests have yet been made but police have set up roadside checkpoints to track down the suspects. They have also ordered every truck driver in Manali to report to their local police station.
The issue of sexual violence has come under intense scrutiny following the gang rape and murder of a student on a bus in the capital New Delhi in December.
The incident triggered nationwide protests, forcing the government to pass a new bill containing tougher punishments, including the death penalty, for rapists.
The rape of the American woman has also raised concerns over the safety of female tourists traveling in India.
In January, a South Korean woman accused a hotel manager in central Madhya Pradesh state of drugging and raping her.
In March, a group of men raped a 39-year-old Swiss tourist in the same state and attacked her husband.
That same month, a 25-year-old British tourist was forced to jump off the balcony of her hotel room in Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, because she feared the hotel owner would sexually assault her after he broke into her room and refused to leave.
