American spying row: 'Sensible talks' needed, says Merkel

  • Germany seeks “sensible talks” with the US on the spying row.

There has been pressure from the public on German leaders to take a tougher stance on the issue after two German nationals were reportedly caught spying for the United States.

German chancellor Angela Merkel said trust between the two sides could only be restored through “talks and certain agreements”, adding that her country would seek out such talks.

Merkel, however, emphasized that Germany and the US continued to remain close partners.
