American Families Heartbroken Over Russian Adoption Ban
December 28 , 2012
The Russia Federation moved closer toward sealing a ban on American nationals adopting Russian children. The Russian Parliament's upper house unanimously approved of a bill which President Vladimir Putin is soon to sign into law. The parliament cited cases of neglect of Russian-born children by their American adoptive parents and the lack of access to the children after adoption as the main reasons for approving the ban. While many in Russia fear that this could only mean punishing Russian children who may be deprived of a loving family, good education and upbringing, hundreds of prospective parents in the US, who are in the final stages of adoption are heart broken. Many have visited Russia and bonded with the children who they mean to adopt. In 2011, over 1,000 children from Russia were adopted by US nationals.
