Alpine parrot kea crowned New Zealand bird of the year

The kea has been declared as the New Zealand bird of the year. The annual bird of the year competition where rare and endangered birds of New Zealand are pitted against one another witnessed more than 50,000 votes cast from across the country. Kea, which is an alpine parrot and lives only in the Southern Alps, bagged 7,311 votes. Kererū, a native wood pigeon, came second with 4,572 votes. Kākāpō was placed third with 2,554 votes.
