Alleged shipwreck captain detained
October 10 , 2013
The man that the Italian police believe was piloting the ship when it capsized last week has been detained; although not confirmed, he might be charged with murder or manslaughter for those killed in the wreck.
Thirty-five year old Khaled Bensalam has previously been arrested for illegally bringing in immigrants and reports suggest that there was another white man on board with him; the authorities are now searching for the other one.
Bodies are still being recovered and the official death toll until now is 275, with 43 discovered yesterday. This number is undoubtedly expected to increase since only 150 out of 500 people survived the accident.
Female deaths are quite disproportionate since only six of them survived and 81 have been found dead already.
