Algeria: 11 soldiers killed in militant ambush

  • Islamist militants attacked a forested area in Algeria’s Ain Defla region, some 150 miles west of Algeria’s capital Algiers, killing at least 11 troops.

The attack took place as celebrations were beginning to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Ain Defla has been home to insurgents in the past, but things have stabilized in recent years.

Smaller groups of militants with alleged links to terrorist outfits such as Al-Qaeda and Islamic State operate in the more remote parts of the country.
