Al-Jazeera journalists should never have been tried, says Sisi

Egypt’s president Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has said that he wished the three al-Jazeera journalists who were given long sentences had never been put on trial.
He admitted the sentences had “very negative” consequences for Egypt’s image.
“The verdict issued against a number of journalists had very negative consequences, and we had nothing to do with it,” Sisi said. “I wished they were deported immediately after their arrest instead of being put on trial.”
