Akihito, Japanese emperor initiates historic abdication
April 30 , 2019
On Tuesday, April 30, 2019, the emperor of Japan, Akihito, has decided to leave his throne. This will be for the first time in history that a monarch will abdicate his throne in Japan in more than 200 years. Several private rituals and ceremonies have already begun in the Imperial Palace. The eighty-five year old emperor took the legal permission to abdicate as he feels that he is not able to discharge his roles and responsibilities due to his deteriorating health and age. The reports state that his son, Price Naruhito, will undertake the duties of the throne and will ascend the Chrysanthemum the following day. This is how a new era is expected to begin in Japan.
