Afghan Taliban names Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada as its new leader

The Afghan Taliban has named Mullah Akhtar Mansour’s successor. Mansour was killed in a US drone strike. The Taliban released a statement naming Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada as its new leader and acknowledging Mansour's death for the first time. Mansour, who had taken over as the leader of the Taliban in 2015, was killed in a drone strike in Balochistan province, Pakistan, on May 21.
