A Catholic newspaper cannot use the word 'Allah' anymore

  • A court has ruled that a Catholic newspaper in Malaysia no longer has the permission to use the word "Allah" when referring to God.

This decision overturned a ruling in 2009 and as per the appeals court, there would be a "confusion in the community" if the word "Allah" is not used exclusively by Muslims.

This issue has been in the middle of the tension related to religion and ethnicity in Malaysia.

Although, the ruling made about 200 Muslims gather with joy, the Catholic newspaper claims the word "Islam" has been used for centuries and has been around since before either of the two religions.

The decision is expected to be appealed to the highest court in Malaysia.
