90 percent vote for independence in Catalonia referendum

In a referendum, Catalans have voted for independence from Spain. According to media reports, the referendum witnessed violence as police cracked down on the polling booths. Hundreds of people were injured in the violence. The Catalan government has said that it has earned the right to independence. Though the turnout was low but according to the preliminary results, around 90 percent of the people supported a split. Nevertheless, Mariano Rajoy, the prime minister of Spain, has termed the vote as illegitimate.
