80% in favour of independence, say Catalonia officials
November 10 , 2014
According to an informal and non-binding vote in Catalonia, over 80% people are in favor of independence for this north-eastern region of Spain, media reports say.
The controversial vote took place despite a ruling by Spain’s constitutional court barring a formal independence referendum.
Catalan leader Artur Mas earlier said that Catalonia had demonstrated “that it wants to rule itself.”
Rafael Catala, Spain’s justice minister, has described the vote as a “political propaganda” that had no democratic validity.
