700 migrants feared dead in fishing boat off Libya

  • April 19, 2015 - A fishing boat carrying about 700 migrants has drowned at the outskirt of Libyan waters, 60 miles off the Libyan coast and 120 miles south of the Italian island of Lampedusa. The migrants were being smuggled to Europe. It is believed that boat turned over when the migrants moved to one side of the vessel. As per media report Italian coastguards have recovered about 20 bodies and 49 survivors. The search and rescue operation is being carried out by Italian navy and coast guard vessels, as well as merchant ships. In case of confirmation the total death toll since the beginning of the year would be more than 1500.
