7.6 magnitude aftershock affects Chile
April 4 , 2014
Chile has experienced a second strong earthquake after a previous one with an 8.2-magnitude, shook the region and forced millions of people to leave their residences.
The earthquake surprisingly resulted in only a few deaths and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet was one of those evacuated after the 7.6-magnitude quake hit. The shake caused buildings to wobble but there haven't been any reports indicating death or damage.
The first quake took the lives of six people and experts credit the low death toll to the level of preparedness in the region. "They're a seismically active region of the world and they are very good at implementing their building codes similar to California," a US Geological Survey spokesman said.
