63 dead in Sri Lankan flood; rescue operations on in southwestern districts

  • Sri Lanka is witnessing the heaviest rain in over a quarter century which has forced over 200,000 people to evacuate from their homes. More than 350 houses have been completely destroyed as of now. The rains have triggered floods and landslides, leaving 63 dead and 134 missing. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has appealed to people living in low-lying area to evacuate due to the risks of rain-triggered landslides. The army has been deployed for disaster relief and rescue operation is underway in Aranayake and Bulathkohupitiya districts in southwestern Sri Lanka. Over 300,000 people have been shifted to relief camps.
