529 sentenced to death in Egypt
March 25 , 2014
An Egyptian court has sentenced 529 supporters of Mohamed Morsi to death and charged them with murdering a policeman. The supporters have also been convicted of attacking police officers last summer.
The rushed hearings involving 150 standing on trial only lasted two days and sixteen suspects were acquitted. However, a rights lawyer mentioned that the harsh sentences will probably be overturned. "This is way over the top and unacceptable," an attorney said. "It turns the judiciary in Egypt from a tool for achieving justice to an instrument for taking revenge. This verdict could be a precedent both in the history of Egyptian courts and, perhaps, tribunals elsewhere in the world."
