48 killed in Kenya clashes

  • At least 48 people have died following ethnic clashes in south eastern Kenya.

The clashes in Tana River district, Coast Province, took place on Tuesday between the Orma and Pokomo groups.

The victims included 31 women, 11 children and six men, many of whom had been hacked to death with machetes.

The clash is the worst single incident since post election violence rocked the country after disputed polls four years ago.

The attack reportedly escalated following a dispute over grazing rights for cattle.

In 2001, a series of clashes between the two groups left at least 130 dead in the same region.
