40,000 migrants have died since 2000, says report

  • At least 40,000 migrants and refugees trying to find a better life have died since 2000 across the world, a new report has shown.

More than half of the victims were desperate migrants trying to reach Europe, the report by the International Organization for Migration says.

Around 6,000 deaths occurred along the United States-Mexico border. Other routes with significant numbers of casualties, include the Indian Ocean and Sahara Desert in Africa, the report says.
