40 migrants found dead in overcrowded boat off Libyan coast

  • About 40 migrants were found dead on an overcrowded boat in the Mediterranean, Italian authorities have said.

They may have died after inhaling exhaust fumes, reports said. The death toll may rise, according to Italy's interior minister Angelino Alfano.

The navy rescued more than 300 people from the boat, some 33 km from the Libyan coast. The survivors were transferred to a Norwegian ship.

This year’s migrant death toll in the Mediterranean has risen to 2,100.
