34 Bishops of Chile Resign over Sex Abuse Scandal

  • All 34 Roman Catholic bishops of Chile have offered their resignations to Pope Francis after the alleged sex abuse scandal broke out, followed by attempts of covering it up. They have reportedly sought forgiveness from the Church as well as the victims for their "grave errors and omissions". Reports say Chile’s Bishop Juan Barros is accused of trying to cover up an investigation against Catholic priest Fernando Karadima (mentor of Bishop Barros and also an influential priest) for abusing young boys during 1970s and 80s. Karadima was found guilty by the Vatican and was sentenced of “penance and prayer” for a lifetime.
