300 migrants dead after boats sink in Mediterranean, says UN
February 11 , 2015
Around 300 migrants are believed to have died after the boats they were in capsized in the Mediterranean Sea, the United Nations has said.
Vincent Cochetel, the regional director of the UNHCR, described it as a “tragedy on an enormous scale”.
The nine people rescued by Italy’s coast guard are reportedly from West Africa. The victims had left from Libya in four boats on Saturday.
Cochetel indicated that European nations needed to do more to save lives, and such migrants should not be left “at the mercy of the sea”.
