298 killed as Malaysia Airlines shot down by missile over Ukraine
July 18 , 2014
A Malaysia Airlines passenger plane was shot down by a missile over east Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.
Though pro-Russian fighters denied targeting the aircraft, initial assessments by security and defense experts in Europe and the US indicate that the rebels may have indeed been responsible — mistaking the passenger plane for a Ukrainian military craft.
An audio recording released by Ukrainian officials, in which alleged rebel commanders are heard admitting that a passenger plane was shot down, bolsters this claim.
Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko described the incident as a “terrorist act.”
